Sometimes your dream job doesn’t always appear on your doorstep. We speak to vets quite regularly who feel limited in their career choices due to a certain type of role not existing for them in practices that are commutable from their home, or because there has been a flurry of corporate buy outs in their area and their preference is to work for an independent practice. Some vets enjoy being based in the community, but others prefer a sense of privacy. Working away from home means when you’re home you can let go of your vet identity, and be more of YOU.
Working in another part of the country you’ll get to experience a whole new set of clients, pets, surroundings, landscapes and activities.
Taking any sized leap of faith and facing new and interesting challenges gives your confidence and self-esteem a great boost!
Being physically close to work can often mean you have more of an emotional attachment and a sense of obligation to your work, often resulting in you overcommitting in an unhealthy way. Working away from home doesn’t mean you are any less invested in your role, but being able to literally leave work at work means you have more mental space and better boundaries.
There’s some truth in the quote “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”. We take so much for granted these days, including our partners, that sometimes space is just what we need. Many people have reported the strengthening of their personal relationships due to working away from home.
